School Nurses

Commonwealth-Parkville School is staffed with two full-time registered nurses providing care and support to our students: Ms. Yira Hernández at the Parkville Campus (Grades PPK–6) and Ms. Dianna Orta at the Commonwealth Campus (Grades 7–12).

Having dedicated nurses on each campus ensures that students receive prompt attention for medical needs, health education, and wellness support. Their presence promotes a safe and healthy school environment, helps manage chronic conditions, and provides families with peace of mind knowing that qualified healthcare professionals are available throughout the school day.

Ms. Yira Hernández graduated from the University of Puerto Rico, Río Piedras with a degree in Nursing. Her background includes a successful career in hospitals, working in neonatal and pediatric critical care units before joining CPS as a teacher assistant. After 20 years in that role, she returned to nursing this year and now serves as our elementary school nurse. Her dedication, clinical expertise, and experience working with students—combined with her strong commitment to child health—make her ideally suited to provide comprehensive care for students in grades PPK–6.

Ms. Dianna Orta serves as the full-time Licensed Registered Nurse at the Commonwealth Campus. She earned her nursing degree from the University of Puerto Rico at Humacao. Before joining CPS six years ago, Ms. Orta accumulated nearly 20 years of nursing experience, including positions at the Interamerican Hospital of Advanced Medicine in Caguas, the Veterans Administration Medical Center in San Juan, Illinois Masonic Medical Center’s Riverpoint Pediatrics, and The Children’s Place Home Health in Chicago. Her extensive clinical background and deep understanding of student health needs make her an invaluable resource for our middle and high school community.

Some of our nurse's duties include: daily management of sick or injured students, administering daily medications, providing first aid care for bumps, bruises, scrapes, scratches and rashes, maintaining accurate in-house health records, providing First Aid/Health Screenings and Health Education, and developing school health policies.

When emergencies arise, although rare, they provide emergency first aid care and utilizes the EMS (Emergency Medical Services), as needed. If you have any questions or concerns, please know that the Nurse’s Office is accessible to you during school hours. You may contact Dianna Orta at dorta@cpspr.org or Yira Hernández at yhernandez@cpspr.org.
