HEADMASTER'S
MESSAGE
On our minds since January 12 is the disastrous earthquake in Haiti, our neighboring Caribbean island. While we have witnessed reports of the unimaginable destruction and loss of life, we are encouraged by the response from people of most backgrounds the world over, including noteworthy generosity here in Puerto Rico.
Commonwealth-Parkville School has been involved through efforts by our faculty, administration, students and parents. The Parkville Campus has asked families for baby food, diapers, water and Gatorade in addition to medical supplies, with overwhelming responses. The Commonwealth Campus special cookout on Friday, January 29, with all food donated by our concessionaire, Conchi Biascoechea, further contributed to this cause with all proceeds going to Haiti. The high school sophomore class also made a cash donation to the Red Cross.
Additionally, on Sunday, January 24, a special event “Paddle for Haiti” was held from Piñones to Puntas Las Marias with a cookout bar-b-que. The paddlers donated $50 each for a 3-mile journey along the shore. The total amount raised with over 90 participants was nearly $10,000, just in one day! Thanks to CPS parents Tanya and Mike Esparza, CHS class of 1979, Puerto Rico Paddle Board Tours, and with cooperation and support from many sectors including the CPS Interact Club and Parent Association, the event exceeding our loftiest expectations attesting to the generous outpouring of support for our Haitian neighbors.
