PHILOSOPHY AND GOALS
The philosophy of the Patricia Clare Library/PKS is to develop children into self-confident, self-sufficient, capable, and caring human beings by using the library’s resources directly with the students and by supporting the goals, teachers and curriculum of Parkville School.  It is the responsibility of the library to have the highest quality materials easily available for the children, staff, and parents to use.  The library fully supports the American Library Association School Library Bill of Rights; a copy of this may be found in the Parents’ Handbook appendices in EDLINE.

The general goals of the library program are:

  • To have an excellent, large, and varied collection of books and materials available
for children of all ages, interests, languages and needs.
  • To give integrated support to the school curriculum.
  • To give guidance to children in their choice of reading material.
  • To cultivate the enjoyment of reading and the children’s appreciation of good literature.
  • To encourage the lifelong use of libraries as an important resource for daily living.
  • To help children develop personal abilities and social understanding.
  • To familiarize children with all media as sources of information and recreation.
  • To teach information retrieval skills relevant to lifelong learning.
  • To encourage children to think of any library as an interesting, enjoyable, helpful and non-threatening place to be.
  • To give professional aid and support to the teachers and administrators.
  • To provide help to parents raising their families and help their children in school.
