CHS Library is committed to implementing 21st century learning initiatives, procedures and systems .We have been assessing and restructuring our services and resources to make them better suited to a student-centered information center:
- Upon completion of the electronic catalog and the barcoding process, we are implementing the electronic circulation module during school year 2011-2012.
- CHS will provide new educational databases to help students from PKS and CHS access reliable, educational, and authoritative material on all their research inquiries. Educational databases avoid the inherent distractions and information “glut” of regular Internet searches. Along with EBSCO and OCENET which we have had for the past two (2) years, this year we have subscribed to FACTS ON FILE (including Video on Demand, Curriculum Resource Center, and Issues and Controversies ) as well as WORLD BOOK ONLINE.
- Members of our Library Advisors Club provide input on needed changes, create innovative projects to implement them, and “market” resources as well as services. Participating students conducted a school-wide evaluation of services and survey regarding future plans and resources for the library, and organized the first CHS Scholastic Book Fair.
- We have restructured all the workshops given by the library, and made them highly interactive, hands-on, and student-centered, while creating a collaborative workplace environment. Teachers meet with the librarian to pre-and post-conference in order to coordinate the scope of the design-based, inquiry-based, and/or collaborative learning experience.
- We have developed a full year curriculum for Library Assistants, to be used with our Work Experience students.
- We help plan, coordinate, and/or implement interdepartmental projects such as, Use of databases and academic search engines (Library and Technology) for students and teachers, Essay writing and research in Science and Math (Biology, Physic, Geometry and Library) Dance workshops (Music History, French, Portuguese, Spanish, Fitness), and workshops on management, media and information literacy, and collaboration and teamwork training (Technology and Library).
- We have begun restructuring our facilities to evolve into an Information Commons within the next five years.
