Guidance & College Counseling

The Guidance Office at Commonwealth High School has many objectives. We provide students (grades seventh through twelfth) with academic and emotional advisement. Programs such as the Advisor/Advisee keep students and teachers connected and in tune with one another. Parents can feel free to set up an appointment with our counselor to discuss any doubts or preoccupations regarding their children.

The college guidance program helps students identify colleges and universities that best match their needs and abilities and assists them through the college admissions process. Although the formal college search begins during the junior year, the process truly begins when a student enters CPS.  Preparation for college, however, begins much earlier. Ninth, tenth, and eleventh graders take the PSAT, while juniors and seniors take the SAT (juniors should be taking both the PSAT and SAT). Students should keep in mind that it is important for them to maintain good grades.  This, and taking challenging courses, will help in the college admissions process.
